Fontainebleau and its painters
Between the Fontainebleau forest and the Loing, painters found the light they were looking for. This route begins at the Château de Fontainebleau, a World Heritage site inhabited by every sovereign from the 12th to the 19th century. It moves on to Thomery, where Rosa Bonheur lived at the Château de By, then to Moret-sur-Loing, its ramparts and its church that Sisley painted fourteen times — over 450 canvases in all from the village. Montigny-sur-Loing and Bourron-Marlotte end the journey, artists' villages where Renoir painted "Le Cabaret de la mère Antony". Five stations, from the shade of the undergrowth to the light on the riverbanks: the finest of day trips.
