The most beautiful metro stations
The Paris metro is more than white-tiled corridors. This fifteen-station route links six whose decor is worth the detour. At Abbesses, the deepest station within Paris with platforms 36 metres down, a Guimard entrance, brought from Hôtel de Ville station and reassembled here in 1974, welcomes travellers. At Madeleine, a 40 m² stained-glass window by Ivan Loubennikov and a thousand enamelled discs by Jacques Tissinier decorate the corridors. At Concorde, the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen is written in blue letters on a white background. At Palais Royal – Musée du Louvre, Jean-Michel Othoniel's Kiosque des Noctambules, made of Murano glass beads, and a fresco of two million Huichol beads await you. At Pont Neuf, giant coins tell the story of money. The route ends at Arts et Métiers, where the line 11 platform is dressed in riveted copper plates, large cogs and portholes imagined by Benoît Peeters and François Schuiten.
