Orly comes from Gallo-Roman Aureliacum, 'Aurelius's estate' (recorded in 774). The airport also covers Paray-Vieille-Poste, where the US air service set up a landing strip in 1917 that became the Orly aerodrome in 1919.

At Paray-Vieille-Poste, Marshal de Vaux's pyramid-shaped tomb, built in 1790 in the cemetery, has been a listed historic monument since 1944.
