Athis comes from Gaulish attegia, 'hut', and Mons from French 'mont', the hill. The villages of Athis-sur-Orge and Mons-sur-Orge were merged in 1817. Hugues Capet had given the Mons estate to the abbey of Saint-Magloire.
Anecdote
In 1230, Saint Louis stayed at Athis with Hugues d'Athis, Grand Panetier of France. The 17th-century Château d'Athis is a listed historic monument.
