Châtillon comes from Late Latin castellum, 'small fort' (attested in 1192). Montrouge, 'Monte rubeo' in 1261, owes its name to the reddish soil of its clay plateau.

During the siege of Paris in 1870, Châtillon was the scene of two battles, from 17 to 19 September and again on 13 October.
