Did you know?
Chars, Clars in 1078 and Chartz in 1176, perhaps comes from a pre-Celtic root kar, 'rocky mound'. The lordship belonged to the d'Aumont, then the Séguier and the d'Albert de Luynes.
Anecdote
Saint-Sulpice church, a listed monument built between 1160 and 1230, marks the transition from Romanesque to Gothic; its Renaissance bell tower was begun in 1520.
