Named after General Daumesnil, a Napoleonic hero who lost a leg at the Battle of Wagram and heroically defended the Château de Vincennes against enemy armies in 1814 and 1815.

When ordered to surrender the Château de Vincennes, Daumesnil is said to have replied he would give it back once his leg was returned.
