Deuil, attested in 862 as Diogilum, may be a Celtic name meaning 'divine clearing'; 'la Barre' was added later. Montmagny comes from Mons Magniacus (1116), a Gallo-Roman estate.

At the Château de La Chevrette in Deuil, Louise d'Épinay hosted a salon attended by Diderot and Rousseau; the château was demolished in 1786, leaving only its gate and lodge.
