Named after Joseph François Dupleix, governor-general of the French settlements in India in the 18th century, architect of a brief French colonial expansion against the British before his fall from favour.
Anecdote
Dupleix died ruined and forgotten in Paris in 1763, after being recalled and disowned by the French Crown.
