Its name is thought to come from a Gaulish form meaning 'marshy place'; in the 13th century the fief belonged to Étienne de Gagny.

The park of Gagny's former château, demolished in 1765, contained the Saint-Fiacre spring, which supplied the Raincy park in the late 18th century.
