Gennevilliers: history and sights
Served by: RER C.
Did you know?
The name may come from *Villare Genne*, 'estate of a Frank named Genne' (an uncertain hypothesis). Known from 875, the village, once dependent on Asnières, became a parish in 1302; its serfs were freed in 1248 by the abbot of Saint-Denis.
Anecdote
In the 18th century Marshal de Richelieu had a château built at Gennevilliers; the Collège Pasteur stands on its site and its former outbuildings survive on rue Jean-Jaurès.
