Did you know?

The name, first recorded as Gisei (978), derives from Gaulish Gisacum, perhaps from a personal name, Gisos. In 978 Countess Letgarde ceded the land to a Chartres abbey, which founded a priory there in 987.

Anecdote

Saint-Michel church, a listed historic monument, has a mid-11th-century nave and a 12th-century choir; its central bell tower collapsed in 1753, damaging the transept.
