A plessis was an enclosure defended by interwoven trees or hedges (De Plexato, 1082). Belleville comes from Bella Villa, 'fine estate'. The fief belonged to the lordship of Ermenonville.

In 1663 the treasurer of France Claude Guénégaud had a château built here; only its moats remain, behind the town hall.
