Did you know?
Vitry comes from Gallo-Roman Victoriacum, 'the estate of Victorius'. Long known as 'Vitry-près-Paris', the town officially became Vitry-sur-Seine in 1897, after 'Vitry-aux-Arbres' was considered as a nod to its tree nurseries.
Anecdote
In 1910, the Seine flood destroyed about 1,500 homes in Vitry and left some 8,000 people homeless.
