Verneuil is thought to derive from two Gaulish roots, *uerno (marsh, alder) and *ialon (clearing, later village). The lordship belonged to the Montmorency family in the 12th century, then passed to the Narbonne and Olier families.

The Church of Saint-Martin, listed as a historic monument in 1930, mixes Romanesque and Gothic (12th century) and stands on Carolingian foundations.
