Mériel: history and sights
Served by: Transilien H.
Did you know?
Recorded in 1487 as 'Meryel', the name is, according to abbé Lebeuf, Méry plus the diminutive -el: a 'little Méry', whose lands it borders. The Cistercian abbey of Notre-Dame-du-Val was founded nearby in 1125.
Anecdote
Notre-Dame-du-Val abbey, listed in 1947, keeps its late 12th-century monks' building. Jean Gabin spent his childhood in Mériel, where a museum is devoted to him.
