The name first appears in 1194 in the Latin form Rubeo monte, 'red mount', most likely because of the reddish clay of the plateau. Guillemite monks settled here in 1258 and stayed until 1674.

In the 17th century, the Aubespine family had a château built in Montrouge by François Mansart; it was demolished around 1815.
