Recorded as 'Manlia' in 1224, the name of Maule is, according to Jacques Tréton, of Gaulish origin and tied to that of the river Mauldre: a 'port on the river that crosses the great road'. Maule was a barony from the Middle Ages.

Anecdote

Saint-Nicolas church, listed in 1883, has an 11th-century crypt, said to be one of the largest in Île-de-France, and a 36 m Renaissance bell tower built in 1547.
