The street, called 'Mangallée' in 1709, became 'Maugallée', then 'Mont-Gallet' in 1760 and 'Mongallet' in 1775; the origin of 'Gallet' remains unexplained. A country track of Reuilly, it was called 'rue du Bas-Reuilly' in the 17th century.

At no. 19 rue Montgallet, the decorations of an old bakery are listed as historic monuments. The street once bordered the convent of the Mathurines.
