From the Latin Montaniacum, Montigny is recorded around 1080 as 'Monteniae villa super ripam Lupam'; the river's name, the Loing, was added over the centuries. Prehistoric tools have been found at the Coulus and Haut-le-Roc sites.
Anecdote
The Church of Saint-Pierre-et-Saint-Paul (12th century) has been listed since 1926, as has, since 1993, a monument to Tadeusz Kościuszko, who lived in the area.
