Recorded as 'Morou' in 1145, the name goes back to Celtic mora, via Old French moree, 'marsh'. Mouroux had a commandery of the Order of Malta at Maison-Neuve.

Édouard Bled (1899-1996), defender of the French language and future author of the famous grammar manual, taught at Mouroux from 1921 to 1926.
