Named after the Saint-Martin district of Étampes, once called 'Étampes-les-Vieilles' and traditionally held to be the town's birthplace. In 1106 Philip I gave its collegiate church to Morigny abbey.

The bell tower of Saint-Martin collegiate church, originally freestanding like an Italian campanile, leans by 1.12 m because the ground settled during construction. The church has been listed since 1906.
