Did you know?
Recorded in 1271 as 'Sarmesia', the name is linked to the Sarmatians whom Rome settled in Gaul around the 5th century (a hypothesis). The commune was created under its present name in 1793 and joined Essonne in 1964.

Racing driver and Resistance member Robert Benoist (1895-1944) lived in Sermaise, where the secret agent Denise Bloch hid during the Second World War.
