Vaires-Torcy: history and sights
Served by: Transilien P.
Did you know?
Vaires probably comes from the Gaulish verne ('alder'), recorded as Vernus around 700; the commune became Vaires-sur-Marne in 1911. In May 1430 Joan of Arc fought the Burgundians of Franquet d'Arras here. Torcy goes back to a Gallo-Roman estate, Torciacum.
Anecdote
In Torcy, a Lebanon cedar planted in the 19th century, from one of three trees of a 1834 convoy, has been listed since 1912: it is the town's only listed monument.
