Val-d'Argenteuil: history and sights
Served by: Transilien J.
Did you know?
Argenteuil, recorded as early as 697 (Argentolaïum), has an uncertain etymology: perhaps 'argent' (gypsum colour) plus a Celtic suffix meaning 'clearing'. A Benedictine nunnery was founded here in 656; Héloïse was educated there, then prioress.
Anecdote
The Saint-Denys basilica, built in 1866 by Théodore Ballu, houses the Holy Tunic, which tradition attributes to Christ; it is a protected object.
