Did you know?
'Vaux' comes from the Latin vallis ('valley'); recorded in 1099, the commune was called Vaux-de-Jouste until 1902. Gypsum was quarried here from the 16th to the 20th century, leaving sinkholes in the Hautil forest.
Anecdote
The church of Saint-Pierre-ès-Liens, first mentioned in 1154, keeps its Romanesque west portal, a rare remnant of the original building.
